#The expanse reading order series
The first part in the series is Leviathan Wakes (2011). Although obviously I have no idea where the unpublished ones should go, so I've placed them chronologically. Questions about any of the works in 'The Expanse', a series of science fiction novels, novellas and stories by James S. It makes more sense and nothing happens which you need knowledge from another book that hasn't been read yet to understand. I personally think the second order is better as it makes a better read. And if you want to be pedantic, you could technically say that The Martian should be read first. Persepolis Rising - Novel to be published 2017Īlso note there are a few more being written, and several planned as well. Untitled Expanse Novella - Short story to be published Nemesis Games - Novel published June 2, 2015īabylon’s Ashes - Novel published December 6, 2016 The Vital Abyss - Short story published October 15, 2015Ĭibola Burn - Novel published June 17, 2014 Today, I would like to tell you about how The Expanse made me less annoyed at one of the major plot points in the very first Mass Effect. Its really excellent sci-fi, and shares many parallels with one of my most loved game series, Mass Effect. Gods of Risk - Short story published September 15, 2012Ībaddon’s Gate - Novel published June 4, 2013 The Amazon Prime series The Expanse is great. Leviathan Wakes - Novel published June 15, 2011Ĭaliban’s War - Novel published June 26, 2012 In a Wednesday live-streamed event over Crowdcast, The. The Butcher of Anderson Station - Short story published October 17, 2011 The ninth and final book of The Expanse series of science-fiction novels will be titled Leviathan Falls and will be released in 2021. The Churn - Short story published April 29, 2014 under one title 'short story'):ĭrive - Short story published November 27, 2012. However another good reading order, and IMO the better one, would be as follows (again main novels in bold, and note that I've jumbled short stories, novellas etc. I still don't think they're critical, but that's a line you wouldn't understand without them.Corey has suggested they are best read in publication order, (main novels in bold): If you read The Churn, you'll understand what Amos meant. "Names matter, boss," Amos said after a moment, a strange look on his big face. In chapter 4 (the first Holden chapter) there's this line. I'm not sure if you've started Cibola Burn yet, but I have a good example of how the short stories seem to be tied to the main series. It's possible the later books will touch on some of the side stories more directly.Įdit to add more info now that I'm further in the series. Since I haven't finished the main series, I can only say that they haven't been mandatory to follow the plot through book 3. I'm even with you on progress through the main books (just finished Abaddon's Gate last week) but I'm also reading the short stories as I go. I guess opinions can vary here, but I would say they are not necessary to follow the main plot. We are a London based, full-service law firm, specialising in providing straightforward advice to entrepreneurial businesses and individuals on domestic and international matters. I'm reading the short stories and main books in publication order. But I need to know if their content is too much important to skip it and read them later, in this case I could also consider the English option. Since I've already started this series in Italian, I'd like to keep reading in this language, for the sake of consistency. I'm curious if these complementary works are a mandatory read, meaning if they contain details that are necessary to fully understand what happens in the main books, or if they provide just some background and could be considered only accessory material, that can be read anytime. These short works were not (yet?) translated, so at the moment only the English editions are available to me. I noticed that besides the regular series of novels, there are also some short stories and novellas set in this universe. I am reading the Italian editions (I don't have any problem about reading in English, but it's my main language and the Italian publisher set a huge discount on all of its catalogue, so I grabbed all of them) I'm reading the beautiful The Expanse series, and I'm currently on book 3, Abaddon's Gate.
